Salary Reductions – It’s Non Sense!

Question: Our Executive Director of our company announced salary reductions a week before payday, due to economical difficulties. I know he may do this, but what are the time frames involved. To tell you a week before payday I feel is not fair, if he told us a month in advance we could still make arrangements for financial commitments. I am also a single mother with a boy at school in Grade 4. Where is the humanity in this procedure?

Answer: No company may reduce salary without consent and due consultation with the staff. This was obviously not done. Recourse may be found in approaching the Department of Labour who deal with salary related issues. They would ask that a formal complaint be raised. Be warned that they will affect an enquiry into what happened and the procedural irregularities. If senior management get wind of who laid the complaint they are not going to be “user friendly.” However in saying that what’s right is right. Humanity was sacrificed to profit a very long time ago!
