Drunk Boss

Question: I read some of your writings on Drunkenness in the workplace where employees are involved. However, what can one do if their employer is an alcoholic? Situation is that a letter of appointment, contract or even job description as not been given. there is an opportunity for another job and two weeks notice may need to be given. the alcoholism causes forgetfulness on the employer’s side therefore causing many mishaps in the company.

Answer: Frank, as stated clearly above, once any person has completed an excess of 24 hours of service for any employer within a months period they will automatically receive all the rights of a permanent employee regardless of a written or signed contract of employment. However, your situation is a bit of an anomaly and you will need to make a decision as to what is in your best interest. Unfortunately there is no recourse for you other than to seek alternative employment. Think about it, if you accuse him via any channels, of being an alcoholic, do you honestly believe your future employment will be “Rosy”.
