Half Day – No Way

Question: I work for a company which, due to the economic climate, needs to put me on half day from the 1st of May 2009. I am working from 8am until 16h00 for 5 days with 1 hour lunch. I want to know what my hours of work should be now that I will start working half day?

Answer: Understand that with the current global economic crises that many companies are instituting short time and many are retrenching so in some respect be thankful that you still have a job. Ordinarily, now that you have been requested to work “half day”, this would probably amount to your hours being from 08h00 to 12h00. Such working hours would not entitle you to a lunch break. However, the employers discretion will prevail.
