UIF and such-like

Question: I feel I am about to be fired long story, have consulted a labour lawyer and was told not to bother as the stress and the money will not be worth it as I will probably lose anyway. My question is as follows, if I get fired in June 2009, can I claim UIF benefits? THEN, My baby is due November, will I be able to then claim Maternity Benefits?Clearly I will have difficulty finding another position with baby on the way. I have been working solidly and contributing to the UIF for years now but wonder where I stand.

Answer: Yes if you are dismissed you will be able to claim UIF for up to a period of six months. However, unless you are employed elsewhere by November you will not be able to claim Maternity benefits. Maternity benefits are in place only for those women that are gainfully employed.
