Contract of Employment

Question: I would like to know if my boss is allowed to refuse to give me a copy of my contract and what exactly minimum wages are for a graphic designer (I have no documentation), and what the minimum wage is for general workers? My salary is R2400.00 per month, and my colleagues haven’t had pay increases in more than a year now, it is said that if they get drivers licences that my boss maybe would pay them more… some of them get less than me…

Answer: Every employee is entitled to a contract of employment by law and must be given one. If he is refusing to do so you have every right to report his conduct. Minimum wage differs on industry and in accordance with wage determinations etc…In general a labourer should be on a monthly minimum of circa R1600 & I would put you into the category of a skilled worker which should be circa at a monthly minimum of R 2800. To advise you correctly I would need to know what business/industry you are employed into.
