Unfair Salary Preference

Question: I started working for a company since the 2nd Jan. 2007. When I started workin for them, the company paid me R4000.00, and then after 6 months the company gave me a raise, then I earned R4500.00 per month. After a year, I received another raise, then my salary was R5500.00. Since then I havent received a raised. Last yr in October, the company hired someone else to do the same work as me as the workload was too much! And I was the only one at my department. The lady used to earn R4500.00, and now she was given a raise of R1000.00. I find this very unfair as it took me the whole 2 yrs to get where I am, and it takes her 8 months to get the same salary as mine. I know I do my work very well…I’m the only black person in the company!

Answer: Increases are discretionary and a company decision. No laws govern such specifically unless there are existing wage agreements etc…
If people do the same tasks they should be paid the same so they may be merely ensuring salary equity. It is not always a black/white issue. I practice salary parity continuously.
