Question:
I have been employed by a company from South Africa to work in Zimbabwe. I have been in Zimbabwe since August 2006 and returned to SA in March 2009. The reason for my return was that the Zimbabwe government has not met a final payment. Two other colleques remained in Zimbabwe and continued the job. They were paid as per our agreement, but I was paid half the salary because I was in South Africa. Can this be done? We were also paid bonusses for our first year and then in 2008 we were told we will not be getting any bonus. The company in SA is now in a bit of problems and I might be ask to go. What is my right and could I claim my salary as it was whilst I was in Zimbabwe?
Answer:
You can claim monies owed as the company is SA based and merely providing contract work to Zim. You are paid by them and not the Zim government. Contact your local department of labour and lodge a complaint for unpaid salaries/bonus etc..This is a free service. The company will be registered here and not Zim so it must comply with our legislation.
