Conditions of Service

Question: My project manager threatened to “take it to a higher level” if I refused to work over the weekend. The conditions of service specifically state that overtime is strictly optional at my place of employ. Is there anything in the law which protects me from this type of bullying and threats?

Answer: A company has the right to request that an employee work overtime if so required. This may include weekend work. The law states that an employee may not perform more than 10 hours overtime per week so if the employer is within those parameters they are just. Equally they have the right to discipline should you unjustly refuse any reasonable request. They cannot force you to perform more than the 10 hrs and law protects you here.
