Gain Experience With Increased Workload

Question:

I have been at my present company for over 4 years, this year we were placed on short time for a few months and given no increases. The company is in a better financial position now and we are no longer all on short time. Due to various issues we are now short staffed and the boss has called 3 of us in and asked us to do more work (much, much more than we have been hired to do) but will not give us either an increase or an indication of when we might expect increases. Is this fair? When confronted the boss said that we were gaining experience but that we would not find other employment.

Answer:

Any company may allocate tasks and duties to employees that are reasonable and within their capability.  So, as long as you and your colleagues can do the work, you will be expected to do so.  No laws force the company to give increases for the allocation of extra tasks.

All I suggest that you do is chat with the manager detailing the excessive increased workloads and ask that remuneration for this increase be considered.
