Question:
In December last year, my manager and her manager promised me a salary adjustment to increase my salary; this was to happen in April 2009. In April, I was told to wait until September because they were adjusting other salaries as well and could do them all at once. I was then promised that my job would re-advertise at a new salary in August.
I would then start on a “new” job at the beginning of September. In mid-July I asked for a meeting to discuss the details of the “new” job that was to be advertised but then I went on sick leave after I had a miscarriage and the meeting didn’t take place. In August my boss’s boss went on leave for a month and my job wasn’t advertised. My boss said she didn’t know anything and had thought that it would have been sorted. Her boss came back in September and never said anything to me. I then took the matter to our HR department.
I constantly have to nag HR for feedback, which hasn’t been mush except that my boss, her boss and his senior all agree that I am being underpaid and that my salary needs to be adjusted. No one is telling me if the adjustment will happen and when it’ll happen. I don’t even know how much I should be earning. I have asked HR to benchmark my job and salary and get back to me but that hasn’t happened. What should I do?
Answer:
I would suggest that you submit a formal written grievance to HR stating that you require clarity on your situation. Grievances must be addressed and responded to within 48 hours by law and then at least you will have a written response to fall back on. Good luck!
